UNIT 2 : OPTICAL SOURCES

- LED’s- Structure, Materials, Characteristics, Modulation, Power &

efficiency, Laser Diodes - Basic concept,  Hetro Structure, properties and modulation.

UNIT 3 : OPTICAL DETECTORS

-  PIN and Avalanche photo diodes, photo detector noise, detector

response time, Avalanche multiplication noise. Photo diode materials. Fundamental of Optical Receiver

Operation.

UNIT 4 : OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

- Source to fiber coupling, fiber to fiber joints,

fiber splicing, fiber connectors. Principal components. Link design calculation, Applications, Wavelength

division multiplexing.

UNIT 5 : OPTICAL FIBER MEASUREMENTS

: Measurements of Fiber attenuation, Dispersion, refractive

index profile, Numerical aperture & diameter.
